“Harmoney”

By: Mark Davidson

A couple of posts ago, I shared some thoughts I had been having regarding marriage and finances. I talked about my questions and my take on the issues that crop up regarding finances in a marriage. While browsing MSN’s money section yesterday, I saw a similar article that actually helped me realise a few things.

I realised that the bottom line of having a marriage in “harmoney” is to communicate with your partner. This is such a sweeping statement – it applies to the marriage as a whole. You can take any aspect of a relationship and it will probably boil down to being able to communicate with one another. With finances, both husband and wife should be open as to what they think about their finances in general.

Take for example what the wife thinks of the husband’s spending habits. Perhaps they are inherently different. The husband likes spending all that he has – he has no concept of saving. The wife, on the other hand, saves all she can and rarely spends. Though both think that they are right, they might have no idea regarding how the other feels and thinks. They have two choices. One is to shut up and keep each other’s thoughts and feelings to themselves. The other is to open up and let each other know what they are thinking. Which one do you think will be a better solution?

I don’t know about you but I believe that a lot of fights and hurt feelings would be avoided if only couples talked more about their take on their finances. What do you think?
