By: Harold Ulvaeus

Stress can easily overwhelm a person. Allowing too much stress into your life without ways to relieve, prevent or manage the stress can mean a future filled with anxiety.

Different things cause stress for different people. Take inventory on what causes stress in your life, and find ways to prevent them, or learn to perceive them differently. Finances is a common reason for stress, especially in a culture that is big on instant gratification.

Preventing debt is of course a great way to avoid that particular stressor, but for many the cat is already out of the bag and the debts are mounting. Learn how to, or get help to set up a budget of what you need to pay for the essentials, including setting up an emergency fund.

Sticking to that budget will by itself cause a reduction in stress, and you'll be able to start paying off your debt without feeling so overwhelmed.

Spending too many hours working is another source for stress. Spending less time with your family than you want to can cause you and them enough stress that you all suffer.

Learn to balance your time at work and your time at home in a healthy way. Discipline you mind to stay focused on work while you are working, and focused on your family once away from work.

Saying yes to everyone who asks you for help can get quite stressful. You neglect yourself when you say yes to too many people who ask. Learn how to say no once in awhile. Help others when you can, but don't go overboard.

Help only one person at a time. Watch out for family and friends that are using you as a crutch. Help them to help themselves. It is perfectly OK to expect something in return. That will also empower the person you are helping.

Avoid handling too many problems or projects at one time. Do one thing at a time to avoid feeling overloaded and overwhelmed.

These are just a few examples of what causes stress. Sit down with a pen and paper and list things in your life that is cause for stress. Make a strategy on how to deal with these stressors. Beat that stress before it beats you.
