Are Your Children Safe From Online Predators?

Online predators come up with very creative ways to entice children to provide them with information. Even if you have blockers on your computer to prevent access to certain sites and information from those sites to your computer, your children are at risk. Many predators pretend to be young children themselves and they talk to children online.

If you allow your child to be in chat rooms or to engage in activities on social websites then you need to talk to them about facts relating to online predators. In almost all instances where it occurs there were warning signs that parents and children just didn’t know about to prevent it from taking place.

Sometimes children stumble across online predators simply by accident. They may type in a website address wrong and taken to a site with inappropriate materials. Make sure your children know to let you know about these instances so that you can block that site from your computer.

Your child needs to know it is never acceptable to give out their personal information online. This includes the town they live in, phone numbers, last name, or the school they attend. They need to know the dangers of arranging meetings with people they meet online as this is a common ploy for online predators. You need to keep the family computer where you can see what is going on so this won’t take place behind your back.

There have been many reported incidents with the popularity of social websites with bullying or threats. They can be in the form of e-mails as well. In many instances these are sent by people that the child already knows, such as classmates. Children need to report this type of abuse to their parents immediately. It is a good idea to contact both the school and the local law enforcement.

Make sure children understand that they shouldn’t download information to the family computer without parental consent. This can open up the computer to viruses and hacking which can lead to others having access to credit card information or banking account information. This can lead to identity theft and financial ruin that will affect the entire family.

Online predators continue to evolve so that they can get the trust of children online. Make sure you educate your family of the many dangers that lurk there. If you believe your child may have been targeted by an online predator you need to contact your local law enforcement immediately. They can investigate the matter and hopeful catch the person responsible. Chances are they may have other leads on the matter and the information you provide could prove to be the missing link.

Don’t let those horror stories that you read in the newspapers or see on TV prevent you from letting your child use the internet at all. However, it is vital that you provide them with the necessary tools to do it as safely as possible. Knowing the dangers that lurk with online predators makes it much harder for them to continue their efforts.
