Is A Restaurant Franchise Right For You?

By: Patricia Farnham

If you think operating a chain restaurant is going to be a piece of cake, you need to think again. Sure, it can offer you the chance to have a successful business but you are going to have to work at it too. In many ways, operating a chain restaurant can be more stressful than setting up your own business. Not only do you have to keep your customers happy, but you have to keep the corporation happy too. Many people want a chain restaurant because they know consumers will be excited to come in. This is often true, but it depends on the particular restaurant you are talking about.

There are some pros and cons to operating a chain restaurant that you really need to be aware of before you make the decision. The reputation of the entire chain is going to affect your business. This can be a good thing because you may be able to open the doors and people are going to rush in steadily. They already know what you have to offer so you don't have to work hard to get them in the door. You still have to offer quality food and service though to keep them coming back.

However, there may come a time when your particular chain restaurant experiences negative publicity. They can have a huge impact on your business because the media takes such issues and sensationalizes them. Even though it may not be your particular business that is involved it will reflect on your image. Think about the Taco Bell rats in New York City and the finger in Wendy's chili issues that have come up. These images definitely make a person lose their appetite for a while and you can see a significant drop in business because of it.

If you want to offer your own food products and do things your way, then a franchise isn't going to be for you. Since you will have their name on your business there are certain conditions you have to abide by. They will want you to make the food and operate the business in a certain way. All of this training will be provided for you though so you won't be left alone to wing it as you are with your own business.

A restaurant franchise can be extremely expensive though so you need to take a close look at the figures. Try to come up with a realistic evaluation of the expenses and income for both scenarios. It is best to err on the side of anticipating more than less so you will be prepared. You need to make enough money to cover the operating expenses and to make a nice profit for yourself.

You are going to need to have some money saved up for a down payment on the chain restaurant. Even though you can get a large percentage of the cost financed either with them directly or with a private lender, they will expect you to have some money to invest. This would be the same with your own restaurant though too as a lender isn't going to give you 100% of what it will take to get it off the ground.

Some restaurant owner's are very disappointed with a chain restaurant image. They feel that they lose their individuality in the process. You will be very limited in advertising and ways that you manage your business. You may have to provide specific types of uniforms and a specific type of layout for the design of the business. You won't be able to decorate it to suit your tastes.

Operating a franchise restaurant works well for some people but not for others. This isn't something you can jump into and then easily get out of. Therefore you really need to do your homework in advance. Don't get caught up in the image of the franchise restaurant that you know. Dig deeper to find out what is going on behind the scenes. You will likely only get one shot at a successful restaurant whether it is a franchise or not. Take your time to make it a very successful restaurant.
