Is There One Best Way to Learn English?

Learning English is no different than learning any new language. You do have to immerse yourself in the language, which means being in situations where those around you are speaking the language. You can go to a place where English is spoken most of the time, but you do need instruction in the language. It takes more than just speaking and listening to help you learn English effectively.

Even native English speakers do not automatically start speaking perfect language and know all the rules of grammar. Babies first start babbling in unintelligible sounds and the parents repeat words to them, pronouncing them very slowly and enunciating all the sounds of the word. In this way they learn words one at a time. When a child continually calls an object by a certain name, the parents will repeat the proper word each time they answer a child's request.

Programs that have closed captioning that translate the speech into English are best because you can then learn to read the words at the same time. Educational programs for children are also an excellent way of learning English because this is how native English-speaking children learn. Although it may seem a little silly for adults, these programs do say the words slowly and repetitively, which is essential.

Using many different methods, these tools and resources will help you learn the rules of the language much faster. They will also give you additional practice in such things as the correct form of the verb, how to use adjectives and adverbs and how to use complete sentences.

Reading children's books in English or for adults news articles written in simple words and phrases is another way of learning the language. Most of the beginner books have only one or two words on a page and are accompanied by pictures. With an online course, you can avail of flash cards that do the same thing. Listening to an English speaker saying words and phrases over and over is very important and is one of the ways you can learn when you take an online course in English. This way you get to know the proper pronunciation of the word. You should also tape yourself speaking English and then replay it so that you can see how you sound and decide where there may be areas that you need to work on.
