Limerick People and City Guide

Limerick is a city and a county situated in the province of Munster in Ireland. It is geographically situated in the Mid West of Ireland, it is also known as the Shannon Region. The reason for this is that the River Shannon flows through it. The River Shannon is Ireland's longest river, it is 240 miles long.

Limerick city has a population of over 90,000 people and is the main economic region outside of Cork and the capital of Ireland Dublin. The main reasons for its prosperity would be its close proximity to Shannon airport, the facilities of University Limerick on its doorstep and the Shannon Development Authority.

Tourists visiting Limerick are spoilt for choice of destinations which include King John's Castle situated on the southern bank of the Shannon, the Hunt Museum which has over 2000 exhibits including a Picasso and many donations made by the Hunt family, St. Mary's Cathedral also known as Limerick Cathedral was founded in 1168 and is one of Ireland's most important medieval building's because of it's eventful history, today it is still used as a place of worship and prayer.

Adare which is one of Ireland's prettiest towns is situated in County Limerick. It is a very beautiful and picturesque town with its thatched roof's and its Tudor style houses. Adare is about 20km outside of Limerick City. It is situated 42km from Shannon Airport. Adare is a very popular location for couple's tying the knot from all over the world. Adare Castle being one of the main attractions to the area, this is an Anglo Norman fortress situated on the banks of the River Maigue.

Lough Gur is a Neolithic Settlement and Stone Age centre, is in County Limerick near the town of Bruff. It contains the largest stone circle in Ireland along with the remains of at least three crannog's. A crannog's is a man made or natural island used for a settlement, the reason was for defense and food i.e. Fishing.

Shoppers are spoilt for choice in Limerick, in the city centre you have many well known retailers such as Brown Thomas, Debenhams, HMV and many more. Outside the city centre you have the crescent shopping centre, which has various restaurants, shops and a 12 cinema Omniplex centre. Limerick also has Jetland shopping centre which has Dunnes Store among its many shops.

Nightlife in Limerick has something to offer everybody, with its many pubs, theatres restaurants and night clubs. Most well known would be Cloghessey's, Dolan's Warehouse which has music every night from local and visiting traditional musicians. It also has a few nightclubs for example Icon, Trinity Rooms etc.

Good places to eat out in Limerick if you're on a budget would be The Wild Onion, this is an American style café deli, Donkey Fords, which is traditional Fish N'Chip shop, Freddy's bistro which serves a mixture of traditional and Italian dishes, The Jasmine Palace which is an excellent Chinese restaurant on O'Connell Street, and it also serves Cantonese food.

Limerick honors the famous Frank McCourt who compiled his memories of growing up and the very hard times in Limerick in the 1930's and 1940's, the book was called 'Angela's Ashes' and which was later made into a Hollywood film.
